We all know that we "age." But the exact mechanisms of why we age remain largely a mystery.

There is no question that aging is influenced by lifestyle, our environment and certain genetic factors, but aging has also been associated with a chronic increase in free radicals, the accumulation of low-grade inflammation and an increase in age-related cellular death. Bottom line: a multitude and combination of all of these factors may play important roles in promoting and accelerating the natural aging process.
Science has shown that a reduction of free radicals and low-grade inflammation as well as deceasing cellular waste through calorie restriction or other dietary manipulation can extend lifespan in a wide variety of animal organisms.
Recent studies have shown that some food-derived small molecules, called phytochemicals, can extend lifespan in various animal species. Phytochemicals come from plant (phyto) derived foods. The best sources of phytochemicals come from eating red, orange and green fruits and vegetables including broccoli, carrots, cooked tomatoes, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, winter squash, apricots, cantaloupe, oranges and watermelon
Needless to say that as research continues, all anti aging programs to achieve maximum health benefits should include these foods.
A basic anti aging diet is simple: Eat a varied diet high in a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. Pay close attention to your intake of brightly colored or strongly flavored vegetables and fruits, which are often the best sources of phytochemicals.
