Dr Ken Romeo - Fish, Astaxanthin and Eye Health - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

Astaxanthin is an important component to a natural anti aging diet. Though astaxanthin has many health benefits as discussed in an earlier article by the Healthy Aging Research Foundation,  astaxanthin is also known to have beneficial effects on eye health.stock-photo-the-kokanee-is-the-landlocked-version-of-the-sockeye-salmon-217636378
In fact, many of the suggested health benefits of astaxanthin are specifically related to your eyes. Astaxanthin can be found in higher concentrations within your retina when consumed from dietary sources, such as foods high in astaxanthin as well as supplements.
Dietary sources of astaxanthin include: sockeye salmon (the most robust in astaxanthin levels), red trout, lobster, shrimp, crawfish, and crabs. (Food sources: Wikipedia)
Along with the similar fat-soluble carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, current research suggests that astaxanthin may help in absorbing some of the blue light and near-UV rays which our retinas are exposed to on a daily basis.
Dietary sources of lutein and zeaxanthin include dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, turnip greens, collards, dandelion greens, and mustard greens. (Food sources: Wikipedia)
Bottom line: Fish as listed above along with certain vegetables may have beneficial effects on your eye health and should be considered in any anti aging dietary program.

Check it out! A substance known as Astaxanthin may be one of the most powerful antioxidants of all. The free radical scavenging capacity of Astaxanthin has been shown to be:
  • 6,000 times that of vitamin C
  • 800 times that of CoQ10
  • 550 times that of vitamin E
  • 200 times that of polyphenols
  • 150 times that of anthocyanins
  • 75 times that of alpha lipoic acid
Scientific results when taken together supports the concept that Astaxanthin's anti aging properties may be more therapeutic rather than preventive in anti aging.  Yes, a therapy for anti aging!
In animal studies focusing on flies, Astaxanthin significantly extended their lifespan and improved the age-related decline in locomotor function. Studies also suggest that Astaxanthin may play a role as a complement to a defective antioxidant system to exert its lifespan prolonging effects. These results in combination strongly suggest the anti aging properties of Astaxanthin and its therapeutic rather than preventive role against aging-related diseases.
"Astaxanthin is found in its highest concentration in Wild Pacific sockeye salmon. It is also found in krill, algae, red trout, shrimp, crab and lobster." (Wikipedia)
