25 Facts you MUST Know Before Beginning the Anti Aging Diet in 2017 – Dr Ken Romeo Reno NV – #7

Just getting older makes it easier for us to gain weight because of our hormonal systems.
Regrettably, insulin, cortisol and estrogen (in men) are hormones that do not decrease with age. Each of these hormones makes gaining weight easier as we age. The Anti Aging Diet will help to balance your hormones naturally making weight loss simple.

25 Facts you MUST know Before Beginning the Anti Aging Diet in 2017 – Dr Ken Romeo Reno NV – #6

Research into sets of identical twins confirms the role of genetics in lifelong obesity and overweight (Hainer et al; Kunesova et al, etc)
Also, if one of two parents is overweight the chances of their children being obese is 40%. If both parents are obese or overweight the chances are 80% that their children will be overweight.
BUT, the metabolic changes that cause overweight are the same in both genetic and acquired obesity. The Anti Aging Diet accounts for genetic factors so you will lose weight in spite of your genetic predisposition.

30 Days of DHEA – Anti Aging Reno NV- Dr Ken Romeo – Day 6

OPINION:    Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
DAY #6:
Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that transmits impulses from one brain cell to another. It is vital to short term memory and to protect the brain from atrophy (shrinking) as we age.
DHEA supplementation has been shown in many studies to produce more acetylcholine and directly affect brain cells in the hippocampus which is a critical area for storage in the brain. (Rhodes et al)

Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo- Antioxidants - A Quick Review

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
stockimagesfreeVirtually all well constructed anti aging programs include supplementation with various kinds of antioxidants.
But a good anti aging scientist never forgets these important considerations and it's a good reminder for those of you who have not sought professional advise in customizing your anti aging program:
  • Patients taking anticancer medications should be warned that antioxidative supplements, such as vitamins C and E, may interfere with those drugs.
  • Vitamin K may inhibit the effect of oral coagulants.
  • Vitamin B3 may decrease synthesis of LDL cholesterol.
  • Vitamin E may block absorption of vitamins A and K.
  • You can "overdose" on fat soluble (A, D, E and K) and other vitamins.

DHEA - Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo

Ponce de Leon pursued his quest for the Fountain of Youth halfway around the world. …….Why?
dhea_chart

A major secret to anti aging is probably on your local pharmacy or grocery store shelves.
Throughout the month of December I am going to post solely on the hormone DHEA and give you evidence as to why this hormone is essential to any anti aging program.
You’ve all heard of the 30-days of Christmas? This will be the 30-days of DHEA along with dosing recommendations.
As a primer, think of hormones as the Board of Directors of a Fortune 500 corporation. Hormones sit on the Board of Directors while nutrients are the working assemblers. Nutrients CANNOT do their job without the correct hormone balance in an individual.

Anti Aging – Reno NV -Effects of Exercise on Muscular Strength, Mass, Mobility and Hormonal Levels in Older Women – Dr Ken Romeo

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
resultsprivatefitness-blogspot
results.privatefitness.blogspot.com
Exercise studies are lacking in populations of older women. For some reason, scientists seem fixated on conducting exercise studies in young and older men. But here’s one for the books:
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of resistance training performed on muscular strength, muscle mass, mobility and hormonal responses in older women.
Twenty-five older women with an average age of 67 +/- 5 years were studied for an 8 week period of exercise with a 12 week washout period between exercise regimens. Two exercise periods were performed and levels of testosterone and IGF-1 were studied in the women pre- and post-intervention.
The results? EXCELLENT!
Significant increases were observed in both groups for muscular strength, knee extension and for skeletal muscle mass. There were no significant effects for IGF-1 and testosterone.
The results suggest that exercise is effective for promoting positive adaptations in muscular strength and hypertrophy in older women.
Exercise should be included in any custom designed anti aging program and adjusted as the client can include more exercise and strengthening in their personal regimen.
PS: Walking, Yoga and Tai Chi are exercises! Clients don’t necessarily need to be throwing around weights in a gym to get healthy.

Depression and St. John's Wort - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
St John’s wort supplements are being used over-the-counter to treat depression. St. John’s Wort may work for some and may have no effect on others.
Depression is known to decrease life span so it should be addressed in a professional anti

aging protocol.
Here are the facts regarding St. John’s Wort:
  • St John’s wort is a potent CYP3A4 inducer and can lead to decreased efficacy of numerous drugs (eg, antiretroviral agents for HIV, calcineurin inhibitors to prevent transplant rejection).
  • St John’s wort may be effective in mild depression, but studies have shown that it is not effective in moderate or major depressive disorders.
  • St. John’s wort may help some types of depression, similar to treatment with standard prescription antidepressants, but the evidence is not definitive.
  • Combining St. John’s wort with certain antidepressants can lead to a potentially life-threatening increase of serotonin, a brain chemical targeted by antidepressants.St. John’s wort can also limit the effectiveness of many prescription medicines.
  • Psychosis is a rare but possible side effect of taking St. John’s wort.
  • St. John’s wort is not a proven therapy for depression. Do not use St. John’s wort to replace conventional care or to postpone seeing your health care provider.
  • Inadequately treated depression may become severe and, in some cases, may be associated with suicide. Consult a health care provider if you or someone you know may be depressed.
Though depression shortens life and should be a consideration in an anti aging program, DEPRESSION SHOULD ONLY BE TREATED BY A QUALIFIED MEDICAL PHYSICIAN.
I DO NOT AND CAN NOT RECOMMEND ST. JOHN’S WORT AS A TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION. PLEASE CONSULT A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL FOR ANY AND ALL MATTERS CONCERNING DEPRESSION.

Dr Ken Romeo - Testosterone Levels in Arguments - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
clipartkid
clipartkid.com
Winning aggressive disputes is one of several things that can alter a person’s response to future stressful events.
“Scientists have previously tested dominant and subordinate male hamsters in a conditioned defeat model and found that dominant individuals show less change in behavior following social defeat stress compared to subordinates and controls, indicating a reduced conditioned defeat response.” Horm Behav. 2016 Sep 9;86:27-35. doi: 10.1016/j.yhbeh.2016.09.002.
So here’s the question: Does winning an aggressive event increase testosterone levels?
Answer…YES!
In the study, male hamsters were paired in aggressive encounters and blood samples were collected immediately before and 15min and 30min after the formation of dominance relationships. “Dominants showed an increase in plasma testosterone at 15min post-interaction compared to their pre-interaction baseline, whereas subordinates and controls showed no change in plasma testosterone.” Horm Behav. 2016 Sep 9;86:27-35. doi:
I am certainly not advocating arguments or fights or anything else that is violent. But I have to wonder whether this model can be compared to much of human behavior. If so, it certainly explains many of the complex human relationships that exist in the work environment where managers have, many times, access to authority which they have no business having – The Peter Principle.

Dr Ken Romeo – Anti Aging – Testosterone Replacement Therapy. A 3-year Study in Older Men – Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Given all the hype about testosterone replacement therapy in men and its purported benefits in anti aging, testosterone‘s effects on muscle strength and physical function in older men have been inconsistent. For that matter, testosterone’s effects on muscle power and physical endurance have not been studied until now!
Depo-Testosterone 200 mg per ml injection Testosterone cypionate
Depo-Testosterone 200 mg per ml injection Testosterone cypionate
A recent study attempted to determine the effects of testosterone administration for 3 years in older men (older than 60 years) on muscle strength, power, endurance and physical function
“In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial, healthy men with total testosterone 100-400 ng/dL or free testosterone <50 pg/mL, were randomized to 7.5-g 1% testosterone or placebo gel daily for 3 years.”
At baseline, the groups were similar but after 3 years, testosterone administration was associated with “significantly greater performance in unloaded and loaded stair-climbing power than placebo.” Also, “Changes in chest press strength and power, leg press power were significantly greater in men randomized to testosterone than in those randomized to placebo. Lean body mass significantly increased more in the testosterone group.” (Pub Med: Effects of Testosterone Supplementation for 3-Years on Muscle Performance and Physical Function in Older Men.)
In short….in this study, testosterone replacement therapy worked!

Pomegranate Juice and Rheumatoid Arthritis - Dr Ken Romeo Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Typically, my posts revolve around natural anti aging treatments and other factors associated with healthy aging. This article discusses a disease that is commonly associated with aging, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and a natural method to help alleviate some of the the pain and inflammation involved with RA flares. It also describes a potentially protective diet for those who are at risk for RA.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, "the average onset of RA is between the ages of 30 and 60." But RA can begin at any age. There is no cure for RA but some effective drugs have been developed to decrease RA flares. RA is an autoimmune condition, which means it is caused by the body's immune system attacking itself. It is not yet known what triggers RA or RA flares.
Environmental factors play an important role in the risk of developing RA. For example, smoking is an established risk factor.
But data regarding a protective diet for developing rheumatoid arthritis is very limited.
Since the main characteristics of RA are joint dysfunction caused by inflammation that results in serious pain, anti-inflammatory agents may alleviate the clinical symptoms.
Pomegranate juice is rich in polyphenolic compounds that possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. A study was conducted to determine the beneficial effects of pomegranate extract in RA patients and concluded that pomegranate juice  alleviates disease activity and improves some blood biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in RA patients.
Simultaneously, a study was conducted to assessed the impact of dietary patterns on rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility.
Rheumatoid_Arthritis.JPG
wikipedia.org
In the "susceptibility study," socio-demographic characteristics and dietary intakes 5 years prior to the onset of RA were reported by a self-administered questionnaire.
The study concludes this: "Compared to healthy individuals, RA patients had decreased consumption of mushrooms, beans, citrus, poultry, fish and dairy products.(further)...analyses revealed that several dietary items may have protective effects on RA development, such as:"
  • mushrooms
  • citrus fruits
  • dairy products
In a nutshell, some dietary interventions may reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. That said, once a patient has developed rheumatoid arthritis the consumption of dairy and meat products is known to produce flares.
Pomegranate juice may help with RA flares, but the early consumption of the foods listed above may decrease the chances of developing RA in the first place.

Klotho: Miracle or Mad Science? - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
kenr
Photo: http://www.DonSaban.com
Klotho may well be the anti aging breakthrough for the near future. Klotho is a transmembrane protein that is produced mainly in the kidneys.
Soluble Klotho can be found in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and the urine of mammals.
Klotho deficiency results in early appearance of multiple age-related disorders and premature death, whereas overexpression of Klotho exerts the opposite effect.
Researchers recently found that a single gene may account for as much as 3% of total variation in human intelligence. If this result holds, it suggests some obvious strategies for developing new kinds of cognitive enhancers since it implies that a single protein (klotho) may be responsible for as much as a 6 point IQ boost.
To put this in perspective, there were previously no other single-point genes believed to account for even a 1 point IQ gain. And a 6 point IQ difference is similar to a farm laborer vs. a grade school teacher. So this could be a big deal.
And the longevity benefit of klotho is even more well studied and potentially larger than the cognitive benefit.

Klotho supplements are available for purchase at a variety of health food stores, pharmacies and on-line. Of course, neither I nor the Healthy Aging Research Foundation can recommend any particular brand of Klotho product.

Healthy Prolonged Aging. What we REALLY Know - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo  775-870-6942
Aging is a well-known and perhaps inevitable process that is influenced by genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors. All factors effecting healthy aging are not known at this time. However, it is my opinion that over 90% of what is known today can increase human lifespan well past the century mark with continued good health.
The exact mechanisms underlying the aging process are not well understood.
.
The reduction of free radicals, low-grade inflammation and the promotion of intra-cellular health by calorie restriction or other dietary manipulation can extend lifespan in a wide spectrum of model organisms.
Additionally, recent studies show that some food-derived small molecules, called phytochemicals, can extend lifespan in various animal species.

Off-Label Drugs and Anti Aging - Dr Ken Romeo - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Given the surge of the aging population in modern societies, one of the most important health care needs is successful aging with less frailty and dependency.
In seems like for the past 10 to 15 years a new anti aging practice appears on every street corner, promising to retarding or even stop and reverse the effects of aging on the human body.
One of the cornerstones of anti-aging medicine is hormone replacement therapy. At present, women live one third of their lives in a state of sex-hormone deficiency. Men are also subject to age-related testosterone decline, but andropause remains frequently under-diagnosed and under-treated.
Due to the decline of hormone production from gonads in both sexes, the importance of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in steroid hormone production increases with age. DHEA levels decrease with age in both sexes.
Skin aging as well as decreases in lean body mass, bone mineral density, sexual desire and erectile function, intellectual activity and mood have all been related to a decrease of hormone production with age.
Disagreements exist between recommendations from medical and scientific societies and the actual use of hormone supplements in aging and elderly patients.
But one can no longer argue that a decline in an individuals hormone levels directly affect the aging process and age-related diseases such as sarcopenia and falls, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, mood disorders, cardiovascular health and sexual activity. Deceased levels do affect the disease states mentioned.
However, methods exist that when utilized under the care of a health provider who specializes in natural healing can be just as effective in disease regression without the dangers of "medical" hormone replacement therapy. Physicians are trained to treat disease. I cannot define aging as a "disease."
depo-testosterone-coupon.png
Natural Methods Exist
We argue on future perspectives of such protocols as part of everyday practice but done naturally when possible and not immediately with dangerous hormone replacement prescription drugs.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - Look to Your Senses for Great Brain Health

Conclusory Opinion: Dr. Ken Romeo   775-870-6942

The sensory measurement of 1,884 seniors (average age 66.7) was tested to see if there was a link between low sensory readings and cognitive impairment.

The scientists measured hearing, visual and smell senses of the volunteers using a variety of standardized methods.
can-stock-photo_csp13038144.jpg
canstock.com
The results showed that hearing, visual and smell senses were independently associated with cognitive impairment risk.
In other words, only single sensory development impacted cognitive development since, "(the study) also showed that 85% of participants with hearing impairment, 81% with visual impairment, and 76% with smell impairment did not develop cognitive impairment during follow-up." This is excellent news!!
It was the conclusion that sensory impairment were not associated to any one sensory system which may indicate that a more global neural health marker is working.
If nothing else, sensory cognitive impairment may be useful in uncovering mechanisms of healthy brain aging but are not independent factors showing potential cognitive decline.

DHEA - A "Must Have" in Anti Aging Programs - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
DHEA is the most abundant steroid hormone in the circulation. It is potent and functions in many ways.
Epidemiological studies suggests that levels of serum DHEA decrease with age. Unfortunately this has been associated with the onset or progression of various age-related ailments, including cognitive decline and dementia, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.
These findings have sparked intense research interest in DHEA supplementation as an "antiaging" therapy.
A little known fact to the general public is that DHEA is being used by 25% of in vitro fertilization clinicians as an adjuvant in assisted reproductive programs.
A recent study examined the use of novel DHEA-containing oral-films in patients undertaking in vitro fertilization and investigated the impact of these pills on their serum androgen profile. "Androgen is a steroid hormone that stimulates or controls the development and maintenance of male characteristics."  ( Sriram. "Steroids". Medicinal Chemistry. Pearson Education India. p. 437.
The study determined the androgen profile of 31 in vitro patients before and after DHEA supplementation. Baseline serum measurements of testosterone (total and free), DHEA sulfate, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and androstenedione were made before and after supplementation.
Each patient received DHEA films containing 25 mg of micronized DHEA, and films were administered sublingually twice daily for a period of no greater than 4 months.
Adjuvant treatment with DHEA boosted the serum concentration of a number of androgen-related analytes, including total and free testosterone, androstenedione, and DHEAS, while serum SHBG remained unchanged. Supplementation also significantly increased the free-androgen index in IVF patients.
It is important to note that the hormone increase following DHEA supplementation was found to be dependent on body mass index (BMI), but not individual age.
"Patients with the lowest BMI (<20.0 kg/m(2)) tended to have lower testosterone and DHEAS, but higher SHBG and androstenedione levels in comparison with other BMI groups post supplementation. However, patients in the highest BMI group (>30.0 kg/m(2)) tended to have lower androgen responses following DHEA supplementation, but these were not statistically different from the corresponding baseline level." (See source below)
The study concluded that DHEA administration results in enhancement of testosterone, DHEAS, and androstenedione levels.  It also showed that BMI significantly influences DHEA uptake and metabolism, and that BMI should be carefully considered during dosage calculation to ensure a significant and robust androgen-profile boost.

Dr Ken Romeo - Contraception and Diabetes - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Pregnancy outcome depends on glycaemic control before conception among women with diabetes, so contraception options for women with diabetes is an extremely important issue.
Types of diabetes such as Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, women with history of gestational diabetes, and breast feeding diabetic mothers may be a consideration in selecting a contraceptive method.
On the other hand presence of diabetic complications is a significant determinant.
plushcare
plushcare.com
Different methods of contraception as oral, injectable, implant, intrauterine devices are available. Patient’s choice and health issues both should be considered while prescribing a contraceptive to a woman with diabetes.
Emergency contraception is sometimes required in situations where there is chance of contraceptive failure. It is important for a woman to review the different contraceptive methods with their physician; their use and limitations. Only then can you make a rational choice.
Surprisingly, this topic is discussed quite often and openly in Anti Aging programs that are custom designed for women of childbearing age.
