Healthy Prolonged Aging. What we REALLY Know - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo  775-870-6942
Aging is a well-known and perhaps inevitable process that is influenced by genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors. All factors effecting healthy aging are not known at this time. However, it is my opinion that over 90% of what is known today can increase human lifespan well past the century mark with continued good health.
The exact mechanisms underlying the aging process are not well understood.
.
The reduction of free radicals, low-grade inflammation and the promotion of intra-cellular health by calorie restriction or other dietary manipulation can extend lifespan in a wide spectrum of model organisms.
Additionally, recent studies show that some food-derived small molecules, called phytochemicals, can extend lifespan in various animal species.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - Look to Your Senses for Great Brain Health

Conclusory Opinion: Dr. Ken Romeo   775-870-6942

The sensory measurement of 1,884 seniors (average age 66.7) was tested to see if there was a link between low sensory readings and cognitive impairment.

The scientists measured hearing, visual and smell senses of the volunteers using a variety of standardized methods.
can-stock-photo_csp13038144.jpg
canstock.com
The results showed that hearing, visual and smell senses were independently associated with cognitive impairment risk.
In other words, only single sensory development impacted cognitive development since, "(the study) also showed that 85% of participants with hearing impairment, 81% with visual impairment, and 76% with smell impairment did not develop cognitive impairment during follow-up." This is excellent news!!
It was the conclusion that sensory impairment were not associated to any one sensory system which may indicate that a more global neural health marker is working.
If nothing else, sensory cognitive impairment may be useful in uncovering mechanisms of healthy brain aging but are not independent factors showing potential cognitive decline.

Dr Ken Romeo - Insulin. Not Just for Diabetes - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Introducing a new drug to the market is a time-consuming and expensive process due to FDA regulations. Discovering new uses for old drugs benefits patients by providing them time-tested drugs that have an established safety profile. Many are generic so they are
123rf

cost effective for the patient.
Developments in insulin therapy are ongoing. It's worth keeping up to date on trends in the use of this powerful glucose-lowering drug.
The purpose of this article is to explore the potential non-diabetic clinical applications of insulin.
The HARF performed an exhaustive literature search which was carried out through various scientific journals regarding the diverse applications of insulin other than in diabetes mellitus. The applications listed below include other potential therapeutic uses of insulin.
Upon studying the literature, the non-diabetic uses of insulin at a minimum include the following:
  • Cancer treatment
  • Wound healing
  • Anti aging
  • Cardioprotective  in acute coronary syndromes
  • Organ preservation
  • Bodybuilding
  • Parenteral nutrition
  • Management of septic shock
  • Critical illnesses requiring the Intensive Care Unit
Any off-label use of insulin needs to be done only under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Eat Less. Live Longer. - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
If you eat less you generally lose weight. But could eating less lengthen your life span?
The answer is probably yes. Caloric restriction is known to extend the lifespan of most organisms that science has studied which may indicate that nutrient and energy regulation has a major impact on aging.
It turns out that caloric restriction modifies our cells and since the greatest risk factor for aging is neurodegeneration it is thought that caloric restriction modifies progressive cell death.
I think I'll be skipping a few meals here and there.

Dr Ken Romeo - Protect Your Eyes. Exercise! - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Retinal cells become increasingly vulnerable to injury as we get older.

Scientists recently showed that the vulnerability to eye injury and retinal protection could be modified with exercise.
In middle-aged mice models, they found that exercise protected against dysfunction and cell loss after an acute injury induced by elevation of intraocular pressure.
Who would have thought that exercise could be good for the eyes?

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno NV - A Fruit to Reduce the Signs of Skin Aging that Really Works!

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
A clinical study was recently conducted to determine whether oral supplementation with a fermented papaya preparation (FPP-treated group) or an antioxidant cocktail (antioxidant-control group, composed of 10 mg trans-resveratrol, 60 µg selenium, 10 mg vitamin E and 50 mg vitamin C) was able to improve the skin antioxidant capacity and the expression of key skin genes, while promoting skin anti aging effects.
The study enrolled 60 healthy non-smoker males and females aged 40-65 years, all of whom showed clinical signs of skin aging. The subjects were randomly divided into two
pap

matched groups, and were administered Papaya or the antioxidant treatment of a 4.5 g/day sachet sublingually twice a day for 90 days in a double-blind fashion.
The parameters investigated were: Skin surface, brown spots, skin evenness, skin moisturization, elasticity (face), redox balance, nitric oxide (NO) concentration, and the expression levels of key genes (outer forearm sample).
As compared with the baseline (day 0) and antioxidant-control values, PAPAYA-treated subjects showed a significant improvement in skin evenness, moisturization and elasticity.
This finding suggests that orally-administered FPP showed a consistent biological and gene-regulatory improvement in the skin, as has also demonstrated in previous experimental and clinical trials testing other tissues, while common oral antioxidants had only a minor effect.

Du Zhong Bark
steroids, flavonoids, and other compounds.
Du Zhong (EU) possess various medicinal properties and has been used in Chinese Traditional Medicine as a folk drink and functional food for several thousand years.
This plant is widely cultivated in China on a large scale because of its medicinal importance. About 112 compounds have been isolated from EU which include lignans, iridoids, phenolics, steroids, and other compounds. Complementary herbs formula of this plant (such as a delicious tea) has shown some medicinal properties.
The leaf of EU has higher activity related to cortex, flower, and fruit [1,2]. The leaves of EU have been reported to enhance bones strength and body muscles [3], thus leading to longevity and promoting fertility in humans [4].
Delicious tea formula made from the leaf of EU was reported to reduce fattiness and enhance energy metabolism. Flavonoid compounds (such as rutin, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid) have been reported to exhibit antioxidants activity in the leaves of EU [5].
It has been widely used solely or in combination with other compounds to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, bone health, sexual dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, and neurological diseases.
The HARGC makes no claim as to the efficacy of Du Zhong or its potential side-effects.

Dr Ken Romeo - Men Aren't Mice - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
News Flash! Humans are neither mice nor invertebrates!
Over the past number of years, a growing amount of studies and discoveries have shown that genetic, pharmacological, and nutritional interventions increase the lifespan of invertebrates and laboratory rodents. But what about humans?
publicdomainimage.jpg
publicdomianimage.com
Anti aging interventions are no longer a dream. They are a reality.
However we need more information than just age and lifespan to evaluate the potential of any proposed anti aging intervention to humans.
As we look at lengthening lifespan, what are the health/physiological implications? How is the quality of life affected with an increased lifespan? Not easy questions but necessary ones.
HARF encourages scientists, investigators and reviewers alike to consider not just increased lifespan, but also increased health along with lifespan.
It is important that investigators indicate any tests in which the treated group did worse from the controls because the assessment of overall health is tricky at best from a clinical perspective.
Nothing discovered to date improves every aspect of health.
Finally, we strongly recommend that functional measurements be performed in both males and females so that sex differences in the rate of functional decline in different sexes are taken into consideration.

Dr Ken Romeo – Anti Aging – Garlic and Your Health – Reno Nevada

So your anti aging program includes taking garlic (Allium sativum) for its health benefits? Hippocrates would be proud! So am I!

all-free-download

Garlic may have blood pressure lowering effects. Other studies have shown that an increase in dietary garlic consumption may be associated with a decreased risk for stomach and colorectal cancer.
However, the exact effects of garlic on both cardiovascular disease and cancer risk are still unclear.
Remember, consuming garlic comes with some very real risks. High doses of garlic prolongs bleeding time so it should be discontinued 7-10 days before surgery. Make sure to tell your surgeon about your use of garlic!

Dr Ken Romeo - Rutin. Skin Savior or Scam? - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Rutin, a quercetin glycoside is a member of the bioflavonoid family which is known to possess antioxidant properties. It can be purchased in tablet or cream form on the internet and in stores.
In a recent study, scientists aimed to confirm the anti‑aging effects of rutin on human dermal fibroblasts and human skin.
To examine the effects of rutin in vivo, rutin‑containing cream was applied to human skin. A double-blind clinical study was conducted in 40 subjects aged between 30-50 years and divided into control and experimental groups.
They examined the effects of rutin using a cell viability assay, senescence-associated-β-galactosidase assay, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and by measuring free radical scavenging activity in vitro.
The test material was applied for 4 weeks. After 2 and 4 weeks, dermal density, skin elasticity, the length and area of crow's feet, and number of under-eye wrinkles following the application of either the control or the rutin-containing cream were analyzed.
Bottom line: Rutin increased the mRNA expression of collagen, type I, alpha 1 (COL1A1) and decreased the mRNA expression of matrix metallopeptidase 1 (MMP1) in HDFs.
The study verified that ROS scavenging activity was stimulated by rutin in a dose‑dependent manner and it identified that rutin exerted protective effects under conditions of oxidative stress.
Furthermore, rutin increased skin elasticity and decreased the length, area and number of wrinkles. The consequences of human aging are primarily visible on the skin, such as increased wrinkling, sagging and decreased elasticity. Overall, this study demonstrated the biological effects of rutin on ROS-induced skin aging.
According to WebMD, "RUTIN Side Effects & Safety: Rutin is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in amounts found in fruits and vegetables. Rutin is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth appropriately in medicinal amounts for a short period of time. It can cause some side effects including headacheflushingrashes, or stomach upset."
The HARF does not endorse any specific Rutin products.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Type II Diabetes: Is HbA1c Level Related to Cognitive Impairment? - Reno Nevada

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
The purpose of a recent study was to clarify the association between the fluctuation of blood glucose levels and cognitive impairment in elderly subjects with type 2 diabetes.
"88 relatively elderly subjects (≥65 years old) with type 2 diabetes were evaluated for fluctuation of blood glucose levels with glycoalbumin (GA)/hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ratio, and estimated cognitive impairment with Hasegawa dementia scale-revised score and mini mental state examination score.
Multivariate analyses showed that GA/HbA1c ratio and urinary albumin excretion, but not hypoglycemia, were independent determinant factors for cognitive impairment in elderly with type 2 diabetes.
The fluctuation of blood glucose levels per se is closely associated with cognitive impairment in elderly subjects with type 2 diabetes even when hypoglycemia is not accompanied.
Since it is very easy to calculate GA/HbA1c ratio, a physician should check this ratio so that they can reduce the fluctuation of blood glucose levels especially in elderly subjects with type 2 diabetes.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - 14 Year Study Reveals which Lifestyles effect Memory Function the Most

Conclusion Opinion: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Posted ahead of article publication in Neuropsychological Development and Cognition.
Understanding the relationship between memory function and lifestyle offers great opportunities for promoting beneficial lifestyle choices to foster healthy cognitive aging and for the development of intervention programs for older adults.
Scientists recently studied a cohort of older adults (age 65 and older) enrolled in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, an ongoing prospective population-based research project.
A total of 1,966 men and women participated in an episodic memory test every 3 years over a period of 14 years. Lifestyle habits were repeatedly assessed using self-report measures.
barchester
barchester.com
Physical activity, light-to-moderate alcohol consumption, difficulties staying asleep, and social engagement were associated with better memory function over the course of 14 years.
In contrast, smoking and long sleep duration were associated with worse memory function.
These findings suggest that certain lifestyle factors can have long-term protective or harmful effects on memory function in aging individuals.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - Natural Substance vs. Nano Cosmeceuticals for Facial Wrinkles

OPINION: Dr. Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
As women age and go through menopause they lose their estrogen supply. Result? Facial wrinkles, crow's feet and general dryness of the skin.
Common over-the-counter nutraceuticals seem a rational choice to combat the estrogen fall in their bodies.
But can natural supplementation work as well as estrogen supplements to fight wrinkles and help women regain their youthful appearance? Yes, but you need to start early and create a proper supplementation regimen.
The most common supplements in anti-aging for both women and men are: Aloe vera, Curcumin, resveratrol, Vitamins C and E, green tea and genistein. Each of these compounds have been exploited by the cosmeceutical industry by nan0-sizing them into compounds for use on the face, lips and hair.
Though the nano-synthesis theory may be correct in conception there are no studies that I am aware of that study their sustained use and potential toxicity in long term use. In fact, the opposite exists.(See next opinion post regarding genistein and cancer)
can-stock-photo_csp4404250
canstockphoto.com
How are many of the anti-aging delivered to the skin and facial areas? Carbon nanotubes. I cannot find any studies relative to the long term use of this technology and safety. Carbon nanotubes need to be studied for their roles in toxicity. This review broadly focuses on the usage of phytocompounds in various cosmeceutical products, nanodelivery technologies used in the delivery of phytocompounds to various cosmeceuticals, and various nanosized phytocompounds used in the development of novel nano cosmeceuticals to enhance skin-based therapy.
Women taking aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer or prevent its recurrence should think twice before also taking a soy-based dietary supplement, researchers report.
Genistein, a soy isoflavone that mimics the effects of estrogen in the body, can negate the effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors, which are designed to reduce the levels of estrogens that can promote tumor growth in some types of breast cancer.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - Genistein for Facial Wrinkles, Considerations in Cancer Treatment

OPINION: Dr. Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
You are post-menopause, beginning to suffer facial wrinkles and your local health food store recommends that you begin taking the wonder natraceutical - genistein - to help alleviate your facial wrinkles. Fine, except you are being treated for cancer and have been put on aromatase inhibitors.
Beware. Caution. Consult your physician or oncologist.
genistein-svg

Think twice before genistein, the soy-based supplement if you are taking aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer or prevent its recurrence.
Genistein mimics the effects of estrogen in the body. Great! But genistein can negate the effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors, which are designed to reduce the levels of estrogens that can promote tumor growth in some types of breast cancer.
I can't say this enough - Use extreme caution and ask your physician before initiating or continuing genistein therapy if you are taking aromatase inhibitors to treat cancer.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - Is Your Aloe Vera Too Old?

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis M.) is used extensively in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Why? Aloe works!
123rf
www.123rf.comproducts.
We are exposed daily to Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. UV radiation induces damage to the skin, which in turn causes depletion of the dermal extracellular matrix and chronic alterations in skin structure.
Code word? Wrinkles and crow's feet!
A study was recently conducted which examined whether baby aloe shoot extract, which is from the one-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, and adult aloe shoot extract, which is from the four-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, have a protective effect on UVB-induced skin photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts.
Results?
It turns out that baby shoot extract may potentially protect the skin from UVB-induced damage more than adult extract.
But a larger question looms...
Has anyone ever seen a product label that states the age of Aloe Vera in the product? This, as well as most of science, remains a mystery.
Please write to me if you find one at the e-mail address listed below.

This is the first report of the use of "18α-GA, a diet-derived compound as prolongevity and antiaggregation factor in the context of a multicellular organism." The study abstract below has been copied word for word from the National Institutes of Public Health.
Translated into simple English the study means: Eat some "real" BLACK licorice for better health and anti aging including potentially slowing Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's Disease Progression in Caenorhabditis elegans and Neuronal Cultures.

"AIMS:
Proteasomes are constituents of the cellular proteolytic networks that maintain protein homeostasis through regulated proteolysis of normal and abnormal (in any way) proteins. Genetically mediated proteasome activation in multicellular organisms has been shown to promote longevity and to exert protein antiaggregation activity. In this study, we investigate whether compound-mediated proteasome activation is feasible in a multicellular organism and we dissect the effects of such approach in aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression.

RESULTS:

Feeding of wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans with 18α-glycyrrhetinic acid (18α-GA; a previously shown proteasome activator in cell culture) results in enhanced levels of proteasome activities that lead to a skinhead-1- and proteasome activation-dependent life span extension. The elevated proteasome function confers lower paralysis rates in various AD nematode models accompanied by decreased Aβ deposits, thus ultimately decelerating the progression of AD phenotype. More importantly, similar positive results are also delivered when human and murine cells of nervous origin are subjected to 18α-GA treatment.

INNOVATION:

This is the first report of the use of 18α-GA, a diet-derived compound as prolongevity and antiaggregation factor in the context of a multicellular organism.

CONCLUSION:

Our results suggest that proteasome activation with downstream positive outcomes on aging and AD, an aggregation-related disease, is feasible in a nongenetic manipulation manner in a multicellular organism. Moreover, they unveil the need for identification of antiagingand antiamyloidogenic compounds among the nutrients found in our normal diet. Antioxid. Redox Signal. 00, 000-000."
