Science has generally found that increased cortisol and lower DHEA levels exist in Alzheimer’s patients. It is known that excess cortisol damages the hippocampus.
DHEA is believed to be able to block the effects of increased cortisol. In one study the authors concluded that “dementia is correlated with low DHEA more so than high cortisol.” (Murialdo et al.)
