Genomic instability and genetic alterations are characteristics shared by cancer, aging and other disease states.
Sirtuins (SIRTs) are substances that regulate gene expression in cellular metabolic status.
SIRTs can modulate chromatin function through direct deacetylation of histones and by promoting altered methylation of histones and DNA, leading to repression of gene alteration. This concept is critical.
SIRTs also interact with a broad range of regulators and target gene expression both positively and negatively.
SIRT inhibition may be beneficial in decreasing the risk of some cancers, while SIRT activation can exert positive anti aging effects and help prevent age-related disease and cancers.
Thus, SIRT modulation may positively affect the treatment of cancer and age-related disorders.
The study indicated below reviewed the emerging data regarding SIRTs in cancer and aging. The study found SIRTs to be an important regulator of genomic stability.
