Male infertility is a sensitive topic. Numerous studies have demonstrated that excess weight and obesity serve an important role in the development of male infertility and sperm production and motility.
So what can be done for your sperm count and quality besides losing weight which is integral to any anti aging program.
A number of studies have reported that resveratrol may regulate the response of cells to specific stimuli that induce sperm cell injury and cell death.
When the sperm of obese males is compared to the sperm of "normal" weight males, the sperm concentration, normal sperm morphology, semen volumes, DNA fragmentation rates and testosterone levels in men from the overweight and obese groups are markedly decreased when compared with men in the normal weight group.
Also, sperm motility is noticeably decreased in obese males compared with the normal weight males.
In a recent study, semen samples were treated with 30 µmol/l resveratrol and sperm motility improved. Also when sperm fluid was treated with zinc, sperm activity increased in the obese male group.
Though there is no direct evidence that obese or other males who supplement with resveratrol and zinc may have better sperm motility, I'm not so sure that it could hurt to do it. Consult with your physician for further guidance.
It may well turn out that supplementing with resveratrol and to a lesser extent zinc, could have a therapeutic and protective effect against obesity-induced abnormalities in semen.
