Let’s get right to the core of this: Testosterone influences well-being, mood and cognition. The administration of testosterone for men in anti aging programs is now common place. Personally, I have found that barring physiological abnormalities, testosterone precursors work just as well and are far less dangerous, have less side effects, and are less COSTLY!
Could testosterone play a role in the treatment of bipolar disorder.
A recent study examined baseline total testosterone levels and current depression scores in male and female patients with bipolar disorder and mild to moderate depression. The study also examined people without bipolar disorder.
The results?
Testosterone levels were significantly lower for male patients with bipolar disorder compared with healthy males. But get this: Women with bipolar disorder had significantly higher testosterone levels than women without bipolar disorder.
One can only conclude that differing testosterone levels may represent an important neurobiological abnormality in bipolar disorder and may differ by gender.
We need to confirm these findings in future studies. Testosterone may turn out to be a rational treatment for bipolar disorder in men, and the use of gender appropriate treatment strategies for the normalisation of testosterone levels in women need to be further examined.
