Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo- Antioxidants - A Quick Review

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
stockimagesfreeVirtually all well constructed anti aging programs include supplementation with various kinds of antioxidants.
But a good anti aging scientist never forgets these important considerations and it's a good reminder for those of you who have not sought professional advise in customizing your anti aging program:
  • Patients taking anticancer medications should be warned that antioxidative supplements, such as vitamins C and E, may interfere with those drugs.
  • Vitamin K may inhibit the effect of oral coagulants.
  • Vitamin B3 may decrease synthesis of LDL cholesterol.
  • Vitamin E may block absorption of vitamins A and K.
  • You can "overdose" on fat soluble (A, D, E and K) and other vitamins.

DHEA - Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo

Ponce de Leon pursued his quest for the Fountain of Youth halfway around the world. …….Why?
dhea_chart
ebay.eu.uk
A major secret to anti aging is probably on your local pharmacy or grocery store shelves.
Throughout the month of December I am going to post solely on the hormone DHEA and give you evidence as to why this hormone is essential to any anti aging program.
You’ve all heard of the 30-days of Christmas? This will be the 30-days of DHEA along with dosing recommendations.
As a primer, think of hormones as the Board of Directors of a Fortune 500 corporation. Hormones sit on the Board of Directors while nutrients are the working assemblers. Nutrients CANNOT do their job without the correct hormone balance in an individual.
Yours in Health! Merry Christmas!

Cinnamon & Diabetes - Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Diabetes is a serious disease that can be effectively addressed by natural supplementations. This is a well-known fact.
Current law bans me from making unsubstantiated claims regarding the use of cinnamon and diabetes, but there is nothing stopping YOU from researching the National Institutes of Health (PUBMED) and drawing your own conclusions.

Aloe Vera...Who Knew? Anti Aging Reno NV - Dr Ken Romeo

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis M.) is used extensively in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Why? Aloe works!
123rf
http://www.123rf.comproducts.
We are exposed daily to Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. UV radiation induces damage to the skin, which in turn causes alterations in skin structure.
Code word? Wrinkles and crow’s feet!
A study was recently conducted which examined whether baby aloe shoot extract, which is from the one-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, and adult aloe shoot extract, which is from the four-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, have a protective effect on UVB-induced skin photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts.
Results?
It turns out that baby shoot extract may potentially protect the skin from UVB-induced damage more than adult extract.
But a larger question looms…
Has anyone ever seen a product label that states the age of Aloe Vera in the product? Please write to me if you find one at the e-mail address listed below.

Brain Friendly Foods – Anti Aging – Reno NV – Dr Ken Romeo

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942

BRAIN-FRIENDLY FOODS

MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay.
One study showed that people who stuck to the MIND diet lowered their risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 54%. That’s big. But maybe even more importantly, researchers found that adults who followed the diet only part of the time still cut their risk of the disease by about 35%.
On the other hand, people who followed the DASH and Mediterranean diets “moderately” had almost no drop in their Alzheimer’s risk, Morris says.
You eat things from these 10 food groups:
  • Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week
  • Other vegetables: At least one a day
  • Nuts: Five servings a week
  • Berries: Two or more servings a week
  • Beans: At least three servings a week
  • Whole grains: Three or more servings a day
  • Fish: Once a week
  • Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week
  • Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil.
  • Wine: One glass a day
You avoid:
  • Red meat: Less than four servings a week
  • Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily
  • Cheese: Less than one serving a week
  • Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week
  • Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week

Anti Aging – Reno NV -Effects of Exercise on Muscular Strength, Mass, Mobility and Hormonal Levels in Older Women – Dr Ken Romeo

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
resultsprivatefitness-blogspot
results.privatefitness.blogspot.com
Exercise studies are lacking in populations of older women. For some reason, scientists seem fixated on conducting exercise studies in young and older men. But here’s one for the books:
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of resistance training performed on muscular strength, muscle mass, mobility and hormonal responses in older women.
Twenty-five older women with an average age of 67 +/- 5 years were studied for an 8 week period of exercise with a 12 week washout period between exercise regimens. Two exercise periods were performed and levels of testosterone and IGF-1 were studied in the women pre- and post-intervention.
The results? EXCELLENT!
Significant increases were observed in both groups for muscular strength, knee extension and for skeletal muscle mass. There were no significant effects for IGF-1 and testosterone.
The results suggest that exercise is effective for promoting positive adaptations in muscular strength and hypertrophy in older women.
Exercise should be included in any custom designed anti aging program and adjusted as the client can include more exercise and strengthening in their personal regimen.
PS: Walking, Yoga and Tai Chi are exercises! Clients don’t necessarily need to be throwing around weights in a gym to get healthy.

Depression and St. John's Wort - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
St John’s wort supplements are being used over-the-counter to treat depression. St. John’s Wort may work for some and may have no effect on others.
Depression is known to decrease life span so it should be addressed in a professional anti

aging protocol.
Here are the facts regarding St. John’s Wort:
  • St John’s wort is a potent CYP3A4 inducer and can lead to decreased efficacy of numerous drugs (eg, antiretroviral agents for HIV, calcineurin inhibitors to prevent transplant rejection).
  • St John’s wort may be effective in mild depression, but studies have shown that it is not effective in moderate or major depressive disorders.
  • St. John’s wort may help some types of depression, similar to treatment with standard prescription antidepressants, but the evidence is not definitive.
  • Combining St. John’s wort with certain antidepressants can lead to a potentially life-threatening increase of serotonin, a brain chemical targeted by antidepressants.St. John’s wort can also limit the effectiveness of many prescription medicines.
  • Psychosis is a rare but possible side effect of taking St. John’s wort.
  • St. John’s wort is not a proven therapy for depression. Do not use St. John’s wort to replace conventional care or to postpone seeing your health care provider.
  • Inadequately treated depression may become severe and, in some cases, may be associated with suicide. Consult a health care provider if you or someone you know may be depressed.
Though depression shortens life and should be a consideration in an anti aging program, DEPRESSION SHOULD ONLY BE TREATED BY A QUALIFIED MEDICAL PHYSICIAN.
I DO NOT AND CAN NOT RECOMMEND ST. JOHN’S WORT AS A TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION. PLEASE CONSULT A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL FOR ANY AND ALL MATTERS CONCERNING DEPRESSION.

Dr Ken Romeo - Testosterone Levels in Arguments - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
clipartkid
clipartkid.com
Winning aggressive disputes is one of several things that can alter a person’s response to future stressful events.
“Scientists have previously tested dominant and subordinate male hamsters in a conditioned defeat model and found that dominant individuals show less change in behavior following social defeat stress compared to subordinates and controls, indicating a reduced conditioned defeat response.” Horm Behav. 2016 Sep 9;86:27-35. doi: 10.1016/j.yhbeh.2016.09.002.
So here’s the question: Does winning an aggressive event increase testosterone levels?
Answer…YES!
In the study, male hamsters were paired in aggressive encounters and blood samples were collected immediately before and 15min and 30min after the formation of dominance relationships. “Dominants showed an increase in plasma testosterone at 15min post-interaction compared to their pre-interaction baseline, whereas subordinates and controls showed no change in plasma testosterone.” Horm Behav. 2016 Sep 9;86:27-35. doi:
I am certainly not advocating arguments or fights or anything else that is violent. But I have to wonder whether this model can be compared to much of human behavior. If so, it certainly explains many of the complex human relationships that exist in the work environment where managers have, many times, access to authority which they have no business having – The Peter Principle.

Dr Ken Romeo – Anti Aging – Testosterone Replacement Therapy. A 3-year Study in Older Men – Reno Nevada

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Given all the hype about testosterone replacement therapy in men and its purported benefits in anti aging, testosterone‘s effects on muscle strength and physical function in older men have been inconsistent. For that matter, testosterone’s effects on muscle power and physical endurance have not been studied until now!
Depo-Testosterone 200 mg per ml injection Testosterone cypionate
Depo-Testosterone 200 mg per ml injection Testosterone cypionate
A recent study attempted to determine the effects of testosterone administration for 3 years in older men (older than 60 years) on muscle strength, power, endurance and physical function
“In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial, healthy men with total testosterone 100-400 ng/dL or free testosterone <50 pg/mL, were randomized to 7.5-g 1% testosterone or placebo gel daily for 3 years.”
At baseline, the groups were similar but after 3 years, testosterone administration was associated with “significantly greater performance in unloaded and loaded stair-climbing power than placebo.” Also, “Changes in chest press strength and power, leg press power were significantly greater in men randomized to testosterone than in those randomized to placebo. Lean body mass significantly increased more in the testosterone group.” (Pub Med: Effects of Testosterone Supplementation for 3-Years on Muscle Performance and Physical Function in Older Men.)
In short….in this study, testosterone replacement therapy worked!

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Reno Nevada - What we REALLY Know about Prolonged Healthy Aging

OPINION:  Dr Ken Romeo  775-870-6942

Aging is a well-known and perhaps inevitable process that is influenced by genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors. All factors effecting healthy aging are not known at this time. However, it is my opinion that over 90% of what is known today can increase human lifespan well past the century mark with continued good health.

The exact mechanisms underlying the aging process are not well understood.
The reduction of free radicals, low-grade inflammation and the promotion of intra-cellular health by calorie restriction or other dietary manipulation can extend lifespan in a wide spectrum of model organisms.
Additionally, recent studies show that some food-derived small molecules, called phytochemicals, can extend lifespan in various animal species.

Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging Protocols for Children and Teenagers - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942

Anti aging protocols for children? You've got to be kidding me?! Yet, an anti aging protocol for children may be just what the doctor ordered. Read on...
Cosmeceuticals are products that cause physiologic changes to the skin. They are used for aesthetic purposes and are a popular alternative to plastic surgery for anti aging treatments.
123rf
rf123.com

Studies of cosmeceuticals in pediatric populations are few and far between and the safety of using cosmeceuticals on children and teenagers should be a major concern.
The FDA does not recognize cosmeceuticals so the stringent regulatory requirements as in pharmaceutical production do not exist. Manufacturers of cosmeceuticals are virtually unregulated in terms of marketing. As far as published research in the pediatric population on the use of cosmeceuticals? You've got to kidding me.
As of this writing, I could find NO safety and efficacy study existing regarding cosmeceutical use in young children and teenagers. Virtually all studies on cosmeceuticals have been performed in women with varying degrees of skin aging.
The cosmeceuticals most likely to be used by younger children and teen agers are moisturizers and sunscreens.
And do teen agers worry about their skin? Of course they do!
As the popularity of anti aging cosmeceuticals grows, I suspect that anti aging practitioners will encounter more and more beauty-conscious teenagers using cosmeceuticals for preventive rather than restorative purposes.
At the very least, sunscreen use by children should be considered mandatory for early skin protection from the sun's damaging rays.
The increased understanding by scientists of the mechanism underlying skin aging forms the scientific basis for cosmeceutical use - free radical formation, the effects of declining hormones, and ultraviolet radiation. This knowledge prompts cosmeceutical manufacturers to use retinoids, botanicals such as soy isoflavones to construct skin moisturizers and sunscreen.
Anti Aging practitioners should become familiar with the use of common cosmeceuticals used by children and teenagers. Let's face it, more and more children will be exposed to cosmeceuticals and may experience side effects such as contact dermatitis and skin irritation.
Again, the use of sunscreens is a MUST for children!
The safety of our children should be a consideration by both parents and anti aging practitioners alike.

Pomegranate Juice and Rheumatoid Arthritis - Dr Ken Romeo Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
Typically, my posts revolve around natural anti aging treatments and other factors associated with healthy aging. This article discusses a disease that is commonly associated with aging, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and a natural method to help alleviate some of the the pain and inflammation involved with RA flares. It also describes a potentially protective diet for those who are at risk for RA.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, "the average onset of RA is between the ages of 30 and 60." But RA can begin at any age. There is no cure for RA but some effective drugs have been developed to decrease RA flares. RA is an autoimmune condition, which means it is caused by the body's immune system attacking itself. It is not yet known what triggers RA or RA flares.
Environmental factors play an important role in the risk of developing RA. For example, smoking is an established risk factor.
But data regarding a protective diet for developing rheumatoid arthritis is very limited.
Since the main characteristics of RA are joint dysfunction caused by inflammation that results in serious pain, anti-inflammatory agents may alleviate the clinical symptoms.
Pomegranate juice is rich in polyphenolic compounds that possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. A study was conducted to determine the beneficial effects of pomegranate extract in RA patients and concluded that pomegranate juice  alleviates disease activity and improves some blood biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in RA patients.
Simultaneously, a study was conducted to assessed the impact of dietary patterns on rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility.
Rheumatoid_Arthritis.JPG
wikipedia.org
In the "susceptibility study," socio-demographic characteristics and dietary intakes 5 years prior to the onset of RA were reported by a self-administered questionnaire.
The study concludes this: "Compared to healthy individuals, RA patients had decreased consumption of mushrooms, beans, citrus, poultry, fish and dairy products.(further)...analyses revealed that several dietary items may have protective effects on RA development, such as:"
  • mushrooms
  • citrus fruits
  • dairy products
In a nutshell, some dietary interventions may reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. That said, once a patient has developed rheumatoid arthritis the consumption of dairy and meat products is known to produce flares.
Pomegranate juice may help with RA flares, but the early consumption of the foods listed above may decrease the chances of developing RA in the first place.

Klotho: Miracle or Mad Science? - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr Ken Romeo   775-870-6942
kenr
Photo: http://www.DonSaban.com
Klotho may well be the anti aging breakthrough for the near future. Klotho is a transmembrane protein that is produced mainly in the kidneys.
Soluble Klotho can be found in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and the urine of mammals.
Klotho deficiency results in early appearance of multiple age-related disorders and premature death, whereas overexpression of Klotho exerts the opposite effect.
Researchers recently found that a single gene may account for as much as 3% of total variation in human intelligence. If this result holds, it suggests some obvious strategies for developing new kinds of cognitive enhancers since it implies that a single protein (klotho) may be responsible for as much as a 6 point IQ boost.
To put this in perspective, there were previously no other single-point genes believed to account for even a 1 point IQ gain. And a 6 point IQ difference is similar to a farm laborer vs. a grade school teacher. So this could be a big deal.
And the longevity benefit of klotho is even more well studied and potentially larger than the cognitive benefit.
selfhacked
selfhacked.com
Klotho supplements are available for purchase at a variety of health food stores, pharmacies and on-line. Of course, neither I nor the Healthy Aging Research Foundation can recommend any particular brand of Klotho product.

Cancer considerations for Treatment with Genistein for Facial Wrinkles - Dr Ken Romeo - Anti Aging - Reno NV

OPINION: Dr. Ken Romeo   775-870-6942

You are post-menopause, beginning to suffer facial wrinkles and your local health food store recommends that you begin taking the wonder natraceutical - genistein - to help alleviate your facial wrinkles. Fine, except you are being treated for cancer and have been put on aromatase inhibitors.
Beware. Caution. Consult your physician or oncologist.
genistein-svg
wikipedia
Think twice before genistein, the soy-based supplement if you are taking aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer or prevent its recurrence.
Genistein mimics the effects of estrogen in the body. Great! But genistein can negate the effectiveness of aromatase inhibitors, which are designed to reduce the levels of estrogens that can promote tumor growth in some types of breast cancer.
I can't say this enough - Use extreme caution and ask your physician before initiating or continuing genistein therapy if you are taking aromatase inhibitors to treat cancer.
